Pink Benin Rider
In the organizer's words:
Artist Talk in English with Modupeola Fadugba, moderated by Barbara Plankensteiner (Director MARKK)
From June, the exhibition Benin. Stolen History will be showing the work Pink Benin Rider (2025) by the up-and-coming Nigerian artist Modupeola Fadugba, which was donated to MARKK at the beginning of the year. The starting point for Pink Benin Rider is a historical equestrian figure from the Benin Museum, which the artist translates into a new visual language.
In conversation, Fadugba provides insights into her artistic practice, which deals with the heritage of the Kingdom of Benin and the tradition of bronze casting. In the context of the international significance of Benin art and current restitution processes, female artists in Nigeria are increasingly taking up this heritage. Fadugba's work is an impressive example of this. Her works combine historical references with contemporary issues and reflect the relationship between past and present.
