Planet Ears presents: BCUC

Just a stone's throw from the church where Desmond Tutu organized the escape of Soweto's most wanted anti-apartheid activists, BCUC rehearse in a former shipping container converted into a communal restaurant, where their indomitable openness resonates in a whole new way. "Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness" (BCUC) see their music as a hedonistic trance, but also as a weapon of political and spiritual liberation.

The seven-piece band has captivated audiences both locally and globally with their indigenous funk and energetic performances, which have quickly made them one of South Africa's most successful musical exports. As the artistic heirs of Philip "Malombo", Tabane and Batsumi, they give a contemporary voice to the ancestral traditions of indigenous peoples. Jazz sounds from the productions of the 1970s and 80s, replaced by hip-hop influences and punk rock energy, take the listener on a fascinating journey. In their songs, BCUC share their controversial yet interesting views on modern Africa and deal with the harsh reality of the voiceless. The Africa they portray is not poor, but rich in traditions, rituals and beliefs.

The years 2017 to 2019 were incredible. BCUC collaborated with legends such as Femi Kuti and Saul Williams and played the crème de la crème of European festivals including Glastonbury (West Holts), Roskilde, Dour, Worldwide, Womad, Fusion, Sziget, FMM Sines, Beaches Brew, Boomtown, Colours of Ostrava and Couleur Café.
