After a great solo concert in May 2025 in the Liebfrauenkirche, Liturgy is now coming to the Stapeltor as a band!
Liturgy is the project of Haela Ravenna Hunt-Hendrix, whose yearning, energetic "Transcendental Black Metal" is located in the field of tension between metal, art music and sacred ritual.
The current line-up consists of Mario Miron (guitar), Tia Vincent-Clark (bass) and Leo Didkovsky (drums).
The band, known for its fusion of sincere emotionality, compositional complexity, stylistic boldness and intense live energy, is both a medium and platform for drama and theology. It was founded in 2005 in the context of the Brooklyn DIY scene as Hunt-Hendrix's solo project while she was studying philosophy and classical composition at Columbia University. In 2009, Hunt-Hendrix sparked an intense discussion in the music world with her text "Transcendental Black Metal".
After expanding to a quartet, the band caused a worldwide sensation in 2011 with their second album "Aesthethica", fusing black metal with math rock and giving the genre an unexpectedly loving, emotional energy. Their ambitious album "The Ark Work" from 2015 caused controversy due to the integration of IDM and trap into their music.
In the fall of 2019, they solidified this soundscape with their highly acclaimed fourth studio album "H.A.Q.Q.", which is linked to an ongoing philosophical YouTube lecture series. Their fifth studio album, an opera entitled "Origin of the Alimonies", was released in November 2020, recorded with an eight-piece chamber ensemble and performed at the Roadburn Festival in 2021 as a live soundtrack to a film of the same name by Hunt-Hendrix. The album "93696" was released in 2023 and was followed by an extensive world tour.
