Democratic public spheres and individual freedoms depend, among other things, on media conditions: On the protection of private lives from surveillance, on the freedom to express one's thoughts publicly, on trust in journalism and political speech and on education in the face of disinformation and misinformation.

Prof. Dr. Stephan Packard from the University of Cologne will introduce media science perspectives on the digital transformation of the exercise of power in the media at Wissenschaft im Rathaus and present key concepts and empirical findings. They describe, for example, how new public spheres function, what media regulation can or should consist of, and what connections exist between new populisms and the disappearance of traditional democratic forms of communication.
