VIENNA CALLING is not a music documentary in the classical sense and certainly not an Austropop history lesson, but an entertaining docu-musical. The protagonists of the film - including EsRAP, Der Nino aus Wien, Lydia Haider, Samu Casata, Gutlauninger and Voodoo Jürgens - visibly enjoy playing. VIENNA CALLING offers them another cinematic stage, which they board with relish and on which they perform a play with a lot of humor.

EsRAP & Gasmac Gilmore, consisting of the rapper Esra and the singer Enes Özmen, who grew up as siblings in the Viennese working-class district of Ottakring, and the band GASMAC GILMORE have become a role model of Austrian resistant pop art with a migrant background through their releases and concerts in recent years.

Gutlauninger stands for entertainment in a golden suit. His suit is legendary, his moves unique, his glasses from a gas station. Gutlauninger outed himself with his superhit "Hektische Liebe" as a full-blooded retro-austro-synthpoper who blows up formats and tears down those houses that cause dead ends.

The film

VIENNA CALLING shows unknown facets of Viennese culture away from the mainstream. The result is an electrifying and poetic approach to the music and cultural scene of a European metropolis, where the current developments and conflicts of our time take place. The Viennese artists take the space they need. But this space is getting narrower and narrower...
