Cologne Queer March – Cologne shows solidarity. Cologne takes a stand.

On Sunday, August 9, queer organizations and associations in the city of Cologne will join forces with their allies from civil society to call for a queer march through downtown Cologne in response to the cowardly Islamist and anti-queer attack on the CSD in Berlin.

The Berlin CSD, which was brought to a horrific end—by an attack on the queer community—had the motto “Taking a Stand Is Hot.” Taking a stand remains hot, but right now, above all, it is one thing: more necessary than ever! That’s why, on August 9, through a broad mobilization of various associations, organizations, and groups, we want to take a stand once again: Anyone who seeks to challenge and restrict the freedom of the queer community—and the freedom of this society—is picking a fight with the wrong people! One thing is also clear: We will not allow ourselves to be exploited by far-right extremists—especially not in the context of hatred toward people of the Muslim faith! We will not let anti-queer bigotry get us down—no matter where it comes from.
We’re still standing!

But this time also calls for a broad commitment from the state and society. Words of solidarity alone are not enough. We demand that the federal government, the states, and local municipalities take measures to sustainably protect and strengthen queer structures and queer lives in order to counter the growing queerphobia in our society.

Cologne’s queer community is therefore calling on lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, trans*, intersex, queers, and allies throughout North Rhine-Westphalia to join the Queer March through the city, which has always stood for diversity, acceptance, and openness to the world:
