China expert Johnny Erling reports on society and life in China today at the Munich Adult Education Center.
The seemingly unstoppable rise of the People's Republic has come to a standstill - partly due to China's rigid population policy. Because Beijing has enforced the one-child policy for far too long, Chinese society is ageing rapidly and shrinking with noticeable consequences: China was overtaken by India as the world's most populous nation in April 2023; growth in the world's second-largest economy is stagnating. Is there a threat of a loss of innovative capacity? A divide between rich and poor? Urban and rural?
Johnny Erling reported for more than 25 years as a China correspondent based in Beijing for German-language daily newspapers, most recently from 1997 to 2019 for WELT (Berlin) and Der Standard (Vienna).
In the program focus China. In the Year of the Dragon , the Munich Adult Education Center will be taking an in-depth look at this fascinating and contradictory country from October to February. What influences has China had and continues to have on our culture and economy? What are the challenges for further cooperation? The program offers a wide range of topics from history and politics, philosophy and culture, languages and cooking courses to exhibitions and musical encounters.
