Group exhibition with 21 artistic positions
Opening: Sat. 27 June, 3 p.m.
as part of the Center for Art's end-of-season party
At the Center for Art, 18 scholarship holders and three guest artists are devoting themselves to the theme of "smoke" in a group exhibition.
The exhibition highlights smoke as an everyday phenomenon, cultural-historical motif and symbol of a reality in constant flux - fleeting, contradictory and yet with a lasting effect.
The Center for Art, formerly a factory hall for tobacco processing, bears the economic, social and cultural aspects of smoking in its history. The transformation of the site from a place of industrial production to a space for cultural reflection opens up new levels of meaning: Tobacco and smoke are transformed from a commodity and everyday practice into an object of artistic debate.
The exhibition moves in the field of tension between past and present, between material industrial history and immaterial perception. Smoke appears as a trace and legacy, but also as a projection surface for imaginations and new narratives. It refers to processes of disappearance and becoming visible, creates images and dissolves them again in the next moment.
The participating artists address different facets of the theme in their works: The tobacco quarter as a former production site, cigarette and pipe as smoking utensils, smoking as a social phenomenon, the volcano as a natural source of smoke, cloud formations, foggy cityscapes, ash and soot as relics of combustion processes as well as images of instability and volatility. The artistic realizations range from painting, works on paper and prints to photography, video, objects and sculptures, as well as installations, participatory projects and performances.
