Revolution

A wild chase through the streets of Moscow ends with a huge crash. Total loss. Mikhail doesn't know what's happening to him when, out of nowhere, he is held responsible for the ominous car accident. If he fails to pay an immense claim for damages within five days, he is sent to prison. With an unexpected donation, he pulls his head out of the noose at the last second. His generous new friends, however, turn out to be a powerful secret society, an inscrutable network with countless members, whose ghostly leader "Batja" pulls the strings from underground and controls politics and the media, scientific and legal institutions to the core. Blindly stumbling into this circle, Mikhail gets caught up in a whirlpool of events that leads him straight into the heart of power. Assignments on behalf of the organization bring him to the edge of his moral certainties, while at the same time doors open to him as if by magic: From a simple architecture semiotics lecturer, he advances at breathtaking speed to become a prorector with his own employees and a fat car. But behind his meteoric rise lies total subjugation. Can the revolution still succeed?

In his novel, published in Germany in 2021, Belarusian author Viktor Martinovich looks deep into the gears of a power apparatus in which surveillance and manipulation, dependence and blackmail, humiliation and reward are perfectly intertwined. In Mikhail, he exposes an intelligent average citizen who gradually allows himself to be seduced by the dark side of power and unconsciously works to maintain a system he seeks to fight.
