The recently rediscovered text "Rezitativ" is a literary sensation: it is the only story by Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison. In it, two young women meet: Roberta and Twyla, both from precarious backgrounds, get to know each other in a children's home and become friends. Time and again, chance brings them together; in flashes we learn about their husbands, their work, their children. Finally, they come face to face at a demonstration against racial segregation. But the author leaves it open as to which of them is white and which is black.
