The ancestors of the banjo

The banjo has a history stretching back thousands of years, and its ancestors are at home in Africa: among the griots in Mali, the spit lute ngoni is considered the ancestor of the banjo, in Senegal it was called akonting. Finally, these instruments came to the Caribbean with the slave trade from the 17th century, where they became known as the "banjar" and changed material from wood and calabash to metal.
