Richard III is one of the most fascinating and sinister villainous characters in world literature. However, Shakespeare's most famous royal drama is much more than a psychogram of evil - it is a showpiece in the analysis of power and manipulation. By allowing not only the insidious title character but also the people around him to have their say, Shakespeare dissects the disastrous political dynamics that make the rise of a nefarious careerist seem inevitable. In his first work at the Bauturm, director Alexander Vaassen will not only focus on Shakespeare's protagonist, who walks over dead bodies in the service of gaining power, but will also question the social contexts that make his fatal, transgressive behavior possible, encourage it and ultimately make it seem inevitable.
