About the novel:

Fifteen dollars. That's the daily budget of siblings Zuzanna and Janko when they fly to the USA. They want to realize a childhood dream and see the Pacific. Zuzanna knows that the road trip will be Janko's last. His illness slows down their progress and is also their strongest motivation. They drive through places where nature relentlessly carries out its processes. They prepare for a tornado, enter barren land, a volcanic eruption leaves its mark. As a geologist, Zuzanna is familiar with these processes, but not with the changes in her brother. With great affection and patience, she tries to find out what it means when a loved one passes away.

About the author:

Marina Schwabe, born in Berlin in 1987, studied law in Berlin and later literary writing in Hildesheim. She was co-editor of BELLA triste, part of the artistic direction of PROSANOVA | 17 and a finalist in the 26th open mike in 2018. She gives workshops in literary writing with children and young people. Rift, her first novel, was awarded the literature prize of the Jürgen Ponto Foundation and is one of the "100 best books of 2025" for ZEIT.
