Johnny Cash (1932–2003), an influential country singer, songwriter, and actor, was known for his critical and unconventional lyrics. He had 13 number-one singles on the U.S. country charts, but he wasn’t afraid to push the boundaries of the genre. His musical range spanned country, gospel, rockabilly, blues, folk, and pop, all the way to alternative country. He wrote about 500 songs, sold more than 90 million records, and was honored with 13 Grammy Awards. For Bob Dylan, he was “the North Star.”
Johnny Cash never lived a particularly straightforward life, but like no other, he became the voice of America. He was inducted into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. “If America could speak as a nation,” wrote the British magazine *Time Out*, “it would sound like Johnny Cash.”
Through many songs—sung in both German and English—as well as stories about their origins and historical contexts, Klaus Grabenhorst explores the legacy of this iconic singer of the century. The program features hits such as “Fosom Prison Blues,” “Ring of Fire,” and “The Man in Black.”

For over 40 years, Klaus Grabenhorst has been on the road as a storyteller, actor, and singer: tours for the Goethe-Institut took him to Turkey; he performed at the TAT in Frankfurt; and on Russian television, he could be heard from the Vakhtangov Theater in Moscow all the way to Vladivostok.
