Desolation, surveillance, sweating in the summer—this bleakness, this hopeless feeling of being young-yet-ancient-and-too-late-for-everything—finding, in the midst of all this despair, finally one person you really, really like—it’s about pop culture, soccer jerseys, feeling infinite, suppressed passions, putting up Maypoles even though it’s embarrassing and it’s going to rain, being pissed off, being sexy, that constant pressure, that constant, unbearable pressure, that pull, that inability to walk away, that inability to, this feeling of always being watched, 67, loud music, and “bury your gays.”
