His former homeland in ruins and his own parents in the Theresienstadt concentration camp: this is how it looks in May 1945 for a young British soldier who has returned. Seven years earlier, Manfred Gans had fled from the Nazis to England at the age of 16. There he became part of the British Army's legendary "Three Troop" unit, with which he also landed in Normandy on D-Day and fought his way home. Now he stands in the destroyed streets of his old home in Borken, Westphalia, where he learns of the fate of his parents - and then sets off to look for them.
In this lecture, historian and filmmaker Daniel Huhn will trace the moving life story of Manfred Gans and then enter into a discussion with the audience.
A joint event of the Gerhart-Hauptmann-Haus Foundation, the German War Graves Commission and the VHS Düsseldorf
