What does the Mediterranean sound like? Instead of a wordy reply, the answer should be: simply listen to the music of Greek singer and composer Savina Yannatou. She is a kind of ambassador for Mediterranean cultures and has spent a lifetime researching which songs were and are sung on the shores of the European inland sea. In her programs, the Hellenic singer stays close to traditions and song forms, but also expands musically. Savina Yannatou mediates between archaic and contemporary sounds.
With her acoustic Salonico Trio, she makes use of the options offered by the selected material and preserves the originality of the singing traditions and songs while enjoying unconventional interpretations.
Athens-born Savina Yannatou made a name for herself at a young age, publishing children's songs and lullabies at an early age. She was often asked by composers of modern Greek classical music to interpret their works. At the same time, she studied early music and came across songs that would later shape her life as an artist. To this day, Yannatou, who has also worked with jazz greats such as Barry Guy and Günter Baby Sommer, introduces her audience to the folk songs of Sephardic Jews as well as tunes from the entire Aegean region, the Balkans and the Middle East.
