In 2011, Jack Sedman and Harry Draper formed their band Seafret after meeting at an open mic night near their hometown of Bridlington. Since then they have been making their folk-influenced music very steadily at a high level, resting on guitars and Sedman's peculiarly touching tenor, which has expanded in various directions over time. The instrumentation is rich and warm, the lyrics clever and mature, success is setting in. And all of a sudden, their track "Atlantis" goes steeply up the charts first on Tiktok (two billion!) and then with a delay of about six years. And what does the duo do? Logs on to Tiktok to see what's actually going on, wonders a bit, is also pleased, and then just carries on as before. The songs of the new album "Wonderland", which was released in April, were already finished anyway, Seafret explained in an interview with kulturnews. And anyway, Sedman says, "We've always made the music we felt too, and I don't think we would have succumbed to the temptation to write a piece that sounds exactly like 'Atlantis'." No, certainly not. Why would they? The title track "Wonderland" is a beautiful indie pop anthem, "Running Out Of Love" is a melancholy masterpiece in the struggle for a slowly disintegrating love, "Never Say Never" is a cool, jaunty pop gem that A-ha would have given away a gold record or two for in the early '90s. Seafret's third record is a big step in a new musical direction. The two Brits have poured plenty of their warm and heartfelt nature into the album. The passionate aesthetic, underpinned by a wonderfully progressive, piano-driven production, takes the beauty of the songs to a new level. The Tiktok effect, Seafret say, will fade again, so what.
