Place: London. Time: vaguely Victorian. Mackie Messer, the city's most successful gangster and best friends with local police chief Tiger Brown, seduces Polly Peachum, daughter of the owners of the local begging mafia. A fight breaks out between the businessmen, as a result of which Macheath is betrayed by his ex-lover, rescued by another ex-lover, but finally arrested by his friend, Chief of Police Brown, who in turn is blackmailed by the Peachums. The execution seems inevitable... The story about love, betrayal, business and morality combines biting social criticism with pleasure and enjoyment - not least because of the songs with music by Kurt Weill.
