In the organizer's words:
The Rock Musical
SOMETHING IS ROTTEN IN THE STATE OF DENMARK. Hamlet’s father has died, and shortly thereafter his mother marries Claudius, the brother of the late king. When Hamlet learns that Claudius murdered his father, he seeks revenge. But he is trapped by social conventions, bound by his love for Ophelia. Hamlet struggles with doubts about whether it is right to repay evil with evil—or even to
and end his own life. And so the tragedy takes its course... Classic Shakespearean texts meet contemporary rock music, and a clean, modern stage set meets elaborate, historically inspired steampunk costumes.
One finds Hamlet’s discontent and bewilderment in many rock and pop song lyrics: In “Shakespeare’s Hamlet,” these literary and musical legends are intertwined. From the poetically tinged “Breathing” by Kate Bush to the provocative “Fuck you” battle cry of Lily Allen. From the rhythmically jagged “Logical Song” by Supertramp to quieter, self-reflective musings like in Adele’s
“Hello,” which includes the line “It’s so typical of me to talk about myself, I’m sorry.”
