When a band begins the German leg of its club tour in a bar in the beautiful Lower Rhine village of Rees-Haldern, it usually bodes well. After all, the Haldern Pop Bar is, so to speak, the offshoot of the Haldern Festival, which has been bringing fantastic music beyond all hypes to the village every August for 40 years now.
So the Canadian band Shred Kelly fits in well there, especially because their sound, halfway between folk and indie, is quite close to the Haldern DNA. Tim Newton, Sage McBride, Ty West and Ryan Mildenberger grew up in the Canadian Rockies, but are only too happy to leave this majestic landscape behind every now and then to play the music metropolises of Canada, America and Europe. Their simultaneously anthemic and melancholic songs like "Sing To The Night", "Going Sideways" or most recently "Days We Have Left" are made to sweeten a foggy November evening. The debut of the four, "In The Hills", was released back in 2012 and already had a small indie hit to its credit with "The Bear". Their second album "Sing To The Night" from 2016 then also attracted attention outside Canada, for which the title track is not entirely innocent. The spherical intro, the acoustic guitar that slowly latches on, the lyrics, the sudden pick-up in tempo after 90 seconds - if you stay still here, you won't feel anything else either. After "Archipelago" (2018) and "Like A Rising Sun" (2020), the new album "Blurry Vision" is now in the starting blocks, which will be released in this country on October 20 and is of course a reason why you can finally experience Shred Kelly live again. The singles so far suggest great things to come: "Days We Have Left" is a wistful, beautiful folk ballad with Sage McBride on lead vocals. "Cracks In The Finish" relies more on indie chops and Tim Newton's charismatic voice. He shares songwriting and singing duties with Sage. "Nothing For A While," on the other hand, is a gloriously melody-drunk sensory overload that you're dying to see performed on a stage in front of you - especially the banjo madness at the end....
