SIEBEN BRÜCKEN

In the organizer's words:

Dancing together unites - then and now. A dance piece about the landscape changed by coal mining and its unifying power. Forms of folk dance are transferred into a contemporary dance practice and something new is created.

Irina Pauls has been dealing with the effects of coal mining on the people of Leipzig's southern region for over 30 years. The four-part series MEHR ALS KOHLE (2024/2025) was already inspired by this. The final part of the project now focuses on the unifying power of dancing together.

The dance piece is about linking high and folk culture, which are usually separated from each other. The dancers absorb the energy, spontaneity, power and desire that the ritualized dancing around the maypole triggers. Colored ribbons and simple dance steps break away from the traditional form and lead into a rough world in the dance piece: the dance flow tears apart. Sculptural forms emerge and disintegrate. Unexpected expressiveness arises in the interplay between live musicians and dancers.

All variations are possible: dancing musicians, free improvisation, interpretation of a fixed score, electronic soundscapes. At the heart of the piece is the process of the dissolution of established, stable forms and movements towards unstable, increasingly evaporating constellations and the question: what potential for renewal lies in what has been handed down?

From 10 years.

In German language.

Duration: approx. 90 minutes, one break.

On Saturday, May 30, the performance will be followed by a POST-PERFORMANCE TALK with Irina Pauls (choreographer) and Ralph Grüneberger (author), moderated by Dr. Theresa Jacobs.
