May 29, 2023 marked the 30th anniversary of the racist arson attack in Solingen. A professional, socio-political and scientific debate has hardly taken place so far. Co-editors Birgül Demirtaş and Adelheid Schmitz present their newly published anthology, in which survivors and family members of the Genç family have their say, as well as other victims of racist and extreme right-wing violence. In addition, the events surrounding the arson attack, contexts, aftermaths and consequences as well as remembrance practices are scientifically classified, reflected and critically discussed from different perspectives.
Birgül Demirtaş studied Social Pedagogy/Social Work as well as Empowerment Studies in her Master's degree. Her focus is on racism (criticism), right-wing and racist violence from the perspective of those affected, and anti-Muslim racism.
Adelheid Schmitz is a research associate at the research center for right-wing extremism/neo-Nazism and the memorial site Alter Schlachthof at the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences.
Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences, Münsterstraße 176, Building 3, Room 1.001.
