About the Museum

The Düsseldorf Bonsai Museum showcases one of the most diverse collections of bonsai in Germany—featuring impressive trees from Japan, China, and Europe. In a peaceful garden setting, bonsai are presented as living works of art—some of which are over 100 years old.

The museum is operated by a nonprofit association. For many years, this association has been dedicated to the care, promotion, and education of bonsai culture and aims to inspire visitors with the beauty and depth of this centuries-old art form.

What is bonsai?

“Bonsai” (Japanese for “tree in a pot”) refers to the art of shaping living trees into miniature forms through pruning, wiring, and styling. The focus is not on simply reducing the size of the tree, but on the deliberate creation of a natural tree form on a small scale—with respect, patience, and a keen sense of aesthetics.
