THE MIRACLE OF BERN
"Boszik has lost the ball ... this time to Schäfer. Schäfer crossed inside. Rahn should shoot from the back ... Rahn shoots ... Goal! Goal! Goal! Goal!" These are the most legendary phrases in German sports reporting. Spoken by Herbert Zimmermann, commentating on the German national soccer team's 3:2 victory over the highly-favored Hungarians in the World Cup final in Bern's Wankdorf Stadium on 4 July. Soccer fan and former German directorial wunderkind Sönke Wortmann set himself the task of adapting this historic event for the screen. "The Miracle of Bern" combines the German triumph with the story of a family in post-war Germany. Although it doesn't always fit together properly, Wortmann presents a solid, ambitious family and sports drama that makes the historical dimensions tangible at times.
