We also dare to perform a little humanist summer solstice ritual: at the "Fire of Bad Arguments": At the summer solstice, many cultures have been celebrating light, community and the dawning of a new phase of the year for centuries. This year, the DA! wants to celebrate this tradition with a small ritual of enlightenment: the "fire of bad arguments". Visitors can write down misconceptions, fake news, conspiracy myths, ideological phrases or personal pet peeves on small pieces of paper - from "Everything used to be better" to "Science is just an opinion". The slips of paper are then symbolically handed over to the fire. Not as a magical act, but as a tongue-in-cheek reminder that progress begins with the ability to criticize - and that enlightenment sometimes means saying goodbye to bad ideas.
Come along, bring friends and spend a relaxed summer afternoon with us in the middle of Düsseldorf in our small but lovely backyard.
No registration necessary - just come along, browse, drink and chat.
Why humanists celebrate the summer solstice: The summer solstice is older than religions, states and ideologies. People have been observing the course of the sun, the changing seasons and the special moments of the natural year for thousands of years. The celebration of the longest day is therefore not a religious privilege, but an expression of community, closeness to nature and shared cultural history. From a humanistic perspective, the summer solstice can also be an occasion to come together, celebrate life and reflect on the present and the future. While previous generations lit fires to dispel darkness and uncertainty, humanism focuses on enlightenment, science and critical thinking.
The summer solstice is a reminder that people create meaning themselves: through exchange, culture, curiosity and shared experience. This is precisely the idea behind the DA! - not to administer enlightenment dryly, but to make it tangible as a living, communal practice.
