Vieux Farka Touré, son, musical heir and successor to the legendary guitarist Ali Farka Touré, will kick off the festival. He has long been well on the way to becoming a legend himself, although the start of his musical path was rocky, just like that of his father. He came from an old family of soldiers and had to assert himself against tradition and expectations in order to become a musician. He also initially envisaged a military career for his son Vieux and was only convinced that a musical career was the right path for his son with the help of a family friend, the great kora virtuoso Toumani Diabaté. This began in 2001 with drums and calabashes, initially at the Institut National des Arts in Bamako, before he turned to the guitar, initially in secret, until his father Ali gave his blessing and finally, shortly before his death, even recorded pieces together with his son, which crowned his debut album in 2007. Already with his second album, enriched by influences from Latin American music and rock, he stepped out of his father's shadow and developed his own style. His performance at the opening of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa made him instantly known to an international audience. Since then, he has played all over the world and released several highly acclaimed albums. In 2012, he set up the Amahrec Sahel Foundation to fund humanitarian aid and promote culture. With the Ali Farka Touré Foundation, he is also preserving his father's legacy. It is no coincidence that the festival opens with this concert, as the roots of Gnawa lie in the Sahel and are closely related to the desert blues.
