The current album A World Outside (Mercury KX) is already the ninth album by Australian pianist and composer Sophie Hutchings. And yet Hutchings - long a star in her native Australia - is still a largely undiscovered insider tip in this country.
With two nominations for the Australian Music Prize and the National Live Music Award for the five best live instrumentalists of the year and the release of eight highly acclaimed albums, including Echoes in the Valley, which reached number 1 classical album in the UK in 2021, Sophie Hutchings is now continuing her impressive musical journey with her new album.
A World Outside offers a unique blend of cinematic soundscapes interweaving strings, electronics, vocals and her signature intimate solo piano sound. An avid surfer and nature lover, Sophie Hutchings continues to draw inspiration primarily from her immediate surroundings, but is also venturing into new horizons for the first time: for A World Outside, for example, she collaborated with indigenous singers, including the highly respected Yolngu singer Rrawun Maymuru from Yirrkala.
Like most Australians, Hutchings grew up on the coast - and spent her vacations there. But travel is her passion: sojourns to India, Southeast Asia and the Middle East have woven golden threads into a sound that Clash Magazine has described as "calm in a crazy world" and MOJO as "sweeping, powerful, magnificently melodic".
In addition to the influences of her Australian homeland and her many travels, Sophie Hutchings' music also contains echoes of composers such as Frédéric Chopin or the proto-minimalist Eric Satie, whose works have long influenced her craft. But contemporary composers such as Arvo Pärt and Jóhann Jóhannsson can also be found in her music.

On April 9, Sophie Hutchings is coming to the resonanzraum St. Pauli to present A World Outside live in a small setting and wonderfully intimate atmosphere.
