Francis "Baby" Houseman (Jennifer Grey) is a girl from a rich family. She and her family spend their summer vacation in 1963 at Max Kellerman's (Jack Weston) hotel, where Baby meets the dashing dance instructor Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze) - his show makes her want to dance too. But the mambo god has no love for spoiled upper-class girls. But then his dance partner Penny (Cynthia Rhodes) drops out due to an unwanted pregnancy and Baby offers her help.
