The city of Neuss has its roots in Roman times. However, it only acquired its current wealth in the Middle Ages during the time of the historic Hanseatic League. The siege by the Burgundian Duke Charles the Bold in 1474-75 was decisive for this. For its brave resistance, the city of Neuss was granted the privileges of a Hanseatic city, but it was never a member of the medieval Hanseatic League, despite its extensive trade relations.

The Hanseatic idea was revived in 1980 in the Dutch city of Zwolle. The city of Neuss is a founding member of the Hanseatic League of Modern Times and today is one of 194 member cities from 16 European countries. A historical tour through the city center of Neuss combines old Hanseatic activities with the tasks and goals of the modern Hanseatic League.
