Stereolab is a British rock band formed in London in 1990. The band originally consisted of Tim Gane (guitar and keyboards) and Lætitia Sadier (vocals, keyboards and guitar), who remained the main drivers and constants throughout the many changes in the line-up.

Stereolab is counted among the representatives of post-rock and plays an experimental mixture of pop, rock and electronics. The band's sound is characterized by the contrast between powerful organ chords, mostly in Farfisa sound, and the female, slightly off-key English or French vocals. Stylistic elements ranging from easy listening to psychedelia and krautrock also come together.

Stereolab emerged from the band McCarthy in 1990 and initially consisted of Tim Gane and Lætitia Sadier. In the same year, Joe Dilworth (drums), Martin Kean (bass) and Gina Morris (keyboards and backing vocals) were recruited. The following year, the first single Super 45 was released on the band's own label Duophonic. In 1992, the line-up changed for the first time and Andrew Ramsay (drums) and Mary Hansen (vocals, keyboard, guitar) replaced Dilworth, Kean and Morris.

Hansen remained a permanent member until her accidental death in 2002. In 1993 Sean O'Hagan (keyboards) and Duncan Brown (bass) joined the band. Katherine Gifford stepped in as an additional keyboardist from 1994, as O'Hagan was devoting more time to his project The High Llamas. Gifford was replaced by Morgane Lhote in 1996. The following year, Brown was replaced by Richard Harrison on bass.

The line-up changed several times in the following years, with other temporary members being Simon Johns (bass), Dominic Jeffery (keyboards), Joe Walters (keyboards, horn and guitar) and Julien Gasc (keyboards and vocals). On April 2, 2009, the band announced that they would be taking an indefinite break. In 2010, the album Not Music was released, which still contains songs from the time when the band was not yet on hiatus.

Stereolab has been active again since 2019. Volumes 4 and 5 of the Switched On series were released in 2021 and 2022, containing recordings from the 1990s and 2000s, but no new material.
