Cologne, 1784: Mass prayers in the town hall square could not prevent the worst flood disaster in living memory. While suffering, hunger, disease and destruction gripped the entire city, the headstrong pharmacist's widow Anna Maria seemed to be the perfect scapegoat in the religious hysteria - as a supposed witch, she was to atone for the disaster. Bailiff Henrik van Venray does everything in his power to prove her innocence and in the process stumbles upon a monstrous intrigue.
