Be there when the DANCE ON ENSEMBLE performs a new interpretation of Merce Cunningham's piece "Story" (1963) at the Museum Ludwig on January 6 and 7, 2026! Cunningham has shaped modern dance like almost no other choreographer. Chance plays an important role in "Story". The structure of the piece is variable: the overall duration, sequences and order change from one performance to the next. The dancers decide independently on movements, space and time.
As there are only a few notes by Cunningham and a single film recording of "Story", a detailed reconstruction is not possible. Daniel Squire, who worked with Cunningham for many years, taught the dancers the familiar sequences and motivated them to develop new movement elements that fit the piece. The stage, costumes and lighting are based on the concepts of Robert Rauschenberg.
