Modern life mirrors ancient tragedies. Whether Oedipus, Antigone or Medea, the play shows how dramatic analogies can be found in the present day.
The Shadows is a silent actors' theater. It tells contemporary stories of people who are strikingly reminiscent of well-known figures from Greek tragedy. Without borrowing from antiquity, Oedipus, Antigone and Medea suddenly appear in the midst of our present. The title of the play, "The Shadows" in German, opens up many associations.
On the one hand, there is a man who learns as an adult that he was stolen during the Argentinian military dictatorship and raised by a foreign family. This knowledge throws his love, his origins, his life and his entire identity out of joint. Next to him is a journalist who is looking for her brother, a doctor who has disappeared in a war zone. Against all warning, she travels there herself, determined to find him, alive or dead. Finally, a woman flees to Europe with her husband and child. In her search to fulfill the promise of a better life, she is betrayed, abandoned and ultimately left alone in a refugee camp. Her love first turns to anger, then to hope and finally to despair.
On this evening, the audience is challenged to take a stand. They are part of everything. Iranian director and author Afsaneh Mahian addresses the audience directly in her play. She talks about her research, about real biographies, about moments in which she realizes: these everyday and modern lives follow the same patterns as in old tragedies. Classic themes such as power, guilt, loyalty and betrayal are not a thing of the past, but are still highly topical. The contemporary play from Iran does not deal with the questions of guilt, law and personal responsibility in a theoretical way. They are existential and political.
