At the end of the 1930s, at the time of racial segregation in the USA: having left the misery of her youth behind her, Billie Holiday (Andra Day) has risen to become one of the most successful jazz singers in the world. However, the celebrated "Lady Day" is a thorn in the side of the government - not least because of her powerful protest song "Strange Fruit", in which she openly denounces the racially motivated lynchings committed in the southern states. Because she continues to sing the song in public despite being banned from performing it, the authorities set federal agent Jimmy Fletcher (Trevante Rhodes) on her. He is to publicize her weakness for drugs and men and use it against her. But when Fletcher meets a woman who doesn't leave him cold....
