It was a vacation that began like any other: sun, beach, family in tow. But for Matthew "Murph" Murphy, frontman of indie rock band The Wombats, this day was to be different. After a "bloody awful morning", he was drawn to the beach, out into the infinity of the ocean, in search of clarity. There, as he stared at the play of the waves, he had an epiphany of sorts. "It felt like a spiritual experience," Murphy describes the awe-inspiring moment that made him suddenly see life in a new way. In that moment, Murphy saw the world, and especially himself, with an unprecedented clarity. "I was living my life like I was wearing blinkers or a racing helmet, trapped in my own head," he recalls. A powerful realization that suddenly made him aware of his self-created limitations. This experience became the creative foundation for "Oh! The Ocean", the Wombats' sixth studio album. It is the band's most sonically daring work to date and expresses a deeper, emotional understanding - almost like an attempt to musically process the questions and doubts that have moved Murphy since that visit to the beach.
Musically, the Wombats have not stood still. The sound on "Oh! The Ocean" shows a band that has grown, moving away from synthetic sounds and taking a warmer, more experimental approach. They combine pulsating grooves reminiscent of Death Cab for Cutie with the creative joy of discovery of St. Vincent and Tame Impala. The result is a modern sound that moves between tech rock and futuristic fuzz rock à la Muse and occasionally ventures the first steps towards blues rock. A new style that leads the band into a more mature phase. For Murphy, the album was an opportunity to reveal his own inner life. He sings openly about fears, depression and marital problems, but also about the darker side of success. Since their debut album "A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation" from 2007 and hits such as "Let's Dance to Joy Division", The Wombats have had a remarkable career. But this success has not left him unscathed - "Success can mess with a troubled mind," Murphy admits. With each album, the band has evolved, from the indie top ten to viral TikTok hits and arena tours. The year 2025 marks a new era for The Wombats. "Oh! The Ocean", which will be released on February 21, symbolizes not only a musical awakening, but also Murphy's personal journey to self-awareness. "It's about looking problems in the eye instead of avoiding them," he explains, describing the common thread of his creative work. "In my time with the band, I've learned to run towards the bullets instead of dodging them." The release of "Oh! The Ocean" in February 2025 also marks the start of The Wombats' biggest tour. After seven major arena shows in the UK, they will then perform throughout Europe. The German concerts in April 2025 promise to be emotional highlights - a live experience full of youthful energy and mature melancholy. A must-see for indie fans and anyone who wants to share Murph's new perspective on life.
