The sound conjurer

Since the ceremonial reopening of Notre-Dame de Paris, Thierry Escaich has been the titular organist of the world-famous cathedral. He is not only a world-class master of his instrument, but is also known for his imaginative improvisations and compositions. An ideal candidate, therefore, to open the "Orgel pur" series at the Elbphilharmonie this season. In his program, Escaich plays his way through music history, beginning with baroque music by Jean-Baptiste Lully and Johann Sebastian Bach's famous Fantasia in C minor, which was played at the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, among others. However, the French organist focuses on the music of the 20th century, with Jehan Alain's elegiac "Litanies", an arrangement of Igor Stravinsky's expressive ballet music for "The Firebird" and the "Fugata" by Astor Piazzolla.
