The human voice takes center stage here, with singing serving as a vehicle for emotion and an expression of longing, comfort, and transformation. Under the direction of Thomas Hengelbrock and in collaboration with the Philharmonic Choir, this program demonstrates how music touches us most deeply when many voices come together in a shared emotion. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy set new standards with his vocal works, thereby also influencing the work of his friend Robert Schumann. To set Goethe’s *Faust* to music, Schumann envisioned a completely free form, and thus he arrived at a “new genre for the concert hall.” In Schumann’s “Faust Scenes,” the acclaimed baritone Samuel Hasselhorn takes on the role of Doctor Faustus, transforming the inner states of the soul into a soundscape.
