Almost exactly 20 years ago, Thrice released "The Artist In The Ambulance", one of the most groundbreaking albums of post-hardcore and emo. With this record, the Californians hit a nerve and musically forged a new path. The band itself doesn't quite see it that way, having reinvented itself as often as it has recorded records over the course of its long career. This also applies, for example, to the impressively complex and yet completely clear "Horizons / East" from 2021 and will also apply to the already announced successor "Horizons / West". But in the meantime Thrice just celebrate the anniversaries as they fall: Last year they were with us and put 20 years of "The Illusion of Safety" in the center of their shows, next February follows (slightly delayed) the tour around their masterpiece and major debut. Now the thing is that Thrice themselves were never really satisfied with this album. Listening to it today, vocalist and guitarist Dustin Kensrue said, it wasn't at all the sound they had envisioned. "Oh my gosh, it's so stiff," he recently told music magazine Spin. At the time, he said, they had no idea how to put their live energy on record. Briefly, Thrice thought about releasing a remix album, but didn't want to change the music too much. "That's like going back and changing 'Star Wars.' Everyone would say, 'What are you doing? No! I was so used to it.'" That's why the guys simply re-recorded the album and released it under the title "The Artist In The Ambulance - Revisited." With guest features from friends like Ryan Osterman (Holy Fawn), Chuck Ragan (Hot Water Music), Sam Carter (Architects), Mike Minnick (Curl Up and Die), Brian McTernan (Be Well) and Andy Hull (Manchester Orchestra), the Yanks have given the work the sound they had in mind after 20 years and quite a few live performances of the tracks - changed just enough so that it sounds new, but you often don't hear exactly why. What is certain is that Thrice's anniversary shows will be a blast, because Thrice have always managed to put the icing on the cake of their exciting sound on stage. With their special guests Copenhagen post-metal band Town Portal, every single show promises to be an opulent experience.
