TIRVV. DIVIDED | THEATER DER WELT

In the organizer's words:

Haunting voices of northern European indigenous people: Documentary material from Russia about the life of the Sami today.

When borders were drawn between Russia, the Grand Duchy of Finland and Norway 200 years ago, they cut through the settlement area of the Skoltsami, an ethnic group of the Sámi who live in the far north-east of Europe. The entire settlement area of the indigenous inhabitants of the European north is called Sápmi. The Sámi were forced to decide which of the new nation states they should remain in. Since 1826, the Sámi on the Russian side of the border have lived differently from the Sámi "on the other side". The division of the Sami into nationally defined territories and the attempt to assimilate them is one of the historical and civilizational catastrophes of European colonization and nationality policy. After Russia's extensive invasion of Ukraine, contact between the Sami on the Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish sides and the Sami on the Russian side was almost completely severed.

TIRRV. DIVIDED - based on the play of the same name - brings to life personal and deeply moving stories that were previously unknown. From 25 hours of audio material and 200 pages of collected texts, authentic monologues were created by Sami people aged 6 to 90 who live on the Russian side of Sápmi. The play was developed and premiered by the Arctic Theater in Murmansk in 2019. The original documentary theater piece "Tirrv" (which means "hello" in the Kola Sami language) is based on interviews conducted in 2018 by fifteen theater professionals with Sami people in the village of Lovozero in the Murmansk region. Local Sámi described the play as one of the most important theater productions about indigenous peoples.

Like the Russian Sámi, the actors in the world premiere production can no longer cross the border. The play's author and director, Evgeny Goman, left Russia and now lives in Kirkenes, Norway. There he is part of Pikene på Broen, a group of curators who work in an interdisciplinary way. TIRRV. DIVIDED will be presented as a staged reading by Russian-speaking actors from Kirkenes, Norway.
