Photographer Tish Murtha sensitively documented the brutal effects of Thatcherism in the north of England, yet she herself was unable to escape the poverty and inequality that her work brought to light. 

Driven by a desire to photographically capture the consequences of deindustrialization for workers in northeastern England during the 1970s and 1980s, Tish Murtha used her camera to portray social division in a deeply empathetic way. She was convinced that documentary photography could reveal and challenge social inequality. Despite early recognition for her work, she was unable to make a living from photography. She died at the age of just 56 from complications of an aneurysm.
