Following the screening, we’ll show a pre-recorded conversation with Marie Tomanová and Thomas Beachdel (in English, approx. 30 min)
Marie Tomanová, who grew up on a small farm in the Czech Republic, came to the U.S. as an au pair—with no safety net, no name. Today she photographs for Nike and Vogue, capturing portraits of stars like Kim Gordon and Jeremy Allen White.
Czech director Marie Dvořáková, herself an emigrant and Student Oscar winner, followed her compatriot with her camera for five years—intimately, unvarnished, up close. The film eschews the vocabulary of conventional success stories: Instead of a smooth rise to fame, it shows doubt, exhaustion, and the tension between artistic integrity and market pressures. Thomas Beachdel, an art historian and her partner—mentor, anchor, and commentator all at once—plays a central role, using his outside perspective to place Tomanová’s journey within a broader context of art and identity.
