Young Lieutenant Pete Maverick Mitchell is a fighter pilot in the United States Navy. During a risky mission, Maverick and his weapons systems officer Nick Goose Bradshaw must ignore the orders of their commander, Stinger, to help a comrade who has suffered a panic attack. Because of this incident, Maverick and Goose are reluctantly recommended by Stinger for training at the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School, known as Top Gun. There, Maverick immediately develops a rivalry with student pilot Tom Iceman Kazanski and gets into trouble due to his unconventional flying style. Although he regularly wins dogfights, for example against the instructor Lieutenant Commander Rick Jester Heatherly, he breaks the rules of engagement and shows little team spirit.
