The Amsterdam merchant Cornelis Sandvoort earns his money by buying and selling tulips. However, his heart does not belong to the precious flower, but to his wife Sophia. But when he hires the artist Jan Van Loos to paint a portrait of his wife, she embarks on an affair with the talented young man. The lovers want to escape to the new world, but have to deceive Cornelis in order to get money. The two develop a dangerous plan.
