From April 5, 2025 to November 9, 2025, the Museum of East Asian Art will be showing works on paper by contemporary Chinese artist Jianfeng Pan (*1973) from the past decade in the special exhibition "Ink Walks", ranging from small album to monumental scroll formats.
The multiversal work of the artist, who has been living in "self-exile" in Finland since 2016, is both deeply rooted in China's historical writing and painting traditions and characterized by his eclectic visions as a graphic designer.
Pan's migration from East Asia to Northern Europe is reflected in an almost uncanny visual language: sometimes graffitiesque, penetrating, explosive; sometimes subdued, tender, contemplative. The portraits combine philosophical and aesthetic concepts from China with motifs from the Scandinavian natural landscape, living environment and everyday culture.
Calling himself a "Social Calligrapher", Pan pursues his creative practice of "Mindful Ink": calligraphy as a global medium and endeavor that promotes interpersonal communication and spiritual growth across societies and cultures. The exhibition comprises three themed rooms. The recordings capture the artist's self-reflective insights in ways ranging from the humorous and satirical to the dark and grotesque.
