Make your own rope accessory from old textiles

In this workshop, you’ll transform discarded textiles into unique ropes and use them to create your own accessory—such as a bag charm, cell phone charm, or keychain.

You’ll learn how to turn old fabrics into new yarns, work with color, texture, and material qualities, and make your own rope on a rope-making machine. Using simple fasteners, knots, and traditional techniques, you’ll create a functional, durable, one-of-a-kind piece.

A hands-on upcycling workshop for anyone who wants to rethink textiles and create with their own hands.

What to expect

• Introduction to textile materials, color, and texture
• Cutting and preparing sorted textiles
• Making new yarns from old textiles
• Working with a rope-making machine
• Sealing the rope using traditional techniques
• Attaching fasteners, knots, and details
• Designing your own rope accessory

You’ll take home

• your own upcycled rope accessory
• Depending on the design, a bag charm, phone charm, or keychain
• Knowledge of fabric qualities, recycling methods, and creative reuse

• No prior experience required
• Materials and tools are provided
• You can bring your own fabric scraps, but you don’t have to
• Please wear clothing that allows you to work comfortably
• The workshop will take place with a minimum of 6 participants.

A workshop byURBAN FIBERSwith Tau Pibernat and Vera Castelijns. URBAN FIBERS is a Berlin-based studio for textile design and research. Tau and Vera work with discarded local textiles and transform them into new yarns, ropes, and textile objects—with a keen sense of craftsmanship, materials, and circular thinking.
