Urban Sketching: Course Series

Would you like to learn how to draw confidently and capture the unique atmosphere of architecture and cityscapes on paper? Then this three-part course with Volker Krieger is just right for you.

In three sequential course modules, you’ll learn the basics of naturalistic drawing step by step—from shapes, proportions, and perspective to light and shadow. You’ll then put what you’ve learned directly into practice: first around the BALOU, and later in the public spaces of Dortmund-Brackel, where you’ll create your own drawn cityscape.

The course is designed for beginners as well as those with some drawing experience who want to deepen their skills and discover the joy of urban sketching.

Course Content

Course Block 1 – Fundamentals of Naturalistic Drawing 
(Thu, Sept. 10 – Sept. 17, 2026, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.)

In the studio, you’ll learn the most important fundamentals of drawing. You’ll learn to accurately capture shapes and proportions, understand perspective, and depict spatial relationships and three-dimensionality through light and shadow. The goal is to develop confidence and self-assurance in your drawing.

Course Block 2 – Urban Sketching at BALOU
(Thu., Sept. 24 – Oct. 1, 2026, 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.)

Now we’re heading outside: Together, we’ll sketch buildings, details, and plants around BALOU. You’ll practice working with perspective, reflections, and natural lighting conditions. If you have one, please bring a folding stool or a tripod.

Course Block 3 – Urban Sketching in Public Spaces
(Thu., Oct. 8–15, 2026, 6:00–9:00 p.m.)

To conclude the course, you’ll create individual cityscapes in Dortmund-Brackel. The group will stay together as we explore, while each participant captures their own view of the city through drawing. Please bring a folding stool or a tripod for this session.

The three course modules build on one another but can also be booked individually.

Please bring:
Pencils (HB, B, and 3B), a pencil sharpener, an eraser, and an A4-sized sketchbook.

For the outdoor sessions, we recommend bringing a folding stool or a tripod.
