Cinematic stardom needs fans: enthusiastic viewers who never miss a movie, want to find out everything about their admired star and get in touch with him or her.

But while research has focused intensively on the stars, the fans have long remained in the dark. This is particularly true of the silent film era, when the film fan culture that we still know today emerged. But who were these early film fans, what fan practices did they establish and what role did being a fan play in their lives?

At Wissenschaft im Rathaus , Professor Dr. Stephan Michael Schröder from the University of Cologne will provide insights into a current research project which, among other things, has made thousands of fan letters from the 1910s and 1920s accessible.
