The photographer Detlef Podehl transforms de-dimensional spaces into two-dimensional surface compositions; in doing so, he sets in motion the same process that has been fundamental to painting, drawing, graphics, photography and later film and video since the Renaissance: the projection of a space onto a surface.
In significant surfaces, of course, that is what the artist is there for, and Detlef Podehl gives himself a special task in this respect - the surfaces are defined by form and color, clearly and precisely separated from one another.
What is shown has been built beforehand; it is not always recognizable at first glance. But the soul of the building is always the reason for a picture: Detlef Podehl interprets architecture as a score and performs it in the picture like a conductor. He thus proves himself to be an artist in the medium of photography.
