Betrayed and sold - The situation of women in Afghanistan
The fate of Afghan women has always been linked to the political interests of those in power in the country. In the patriarchal, extremely misogynistic tradition of Afghan society, they have long been regarded as property without any human rights that can be exploited, violated, abused or killed with impunity.
At the same time, women have been systematically instrumentalized by external actors to give military interventions a humanitarian veneer, without ever really improving their lives in a sustainable way.
Since their return to power in 2021, the Taliban have once again wiped out practically all progress in the country. Women have since been completely banned from public life. The global public is no longer interested in their dramatic plight and the continued drastic violations of their human rights.
With this event, we are bringing this reality back into the political consciousness.
In conversation with journalist Edda Dammmüller, ethnologist and author Shikiba Babori will explore the historical and current reasons for the situation of women in Afghanistan. She reports on developments after 2022. What is the situation of women today?
Shikiba Babori was born in Kabul and works as a journalist, ethnologist and author. She has been reporting regularly from Afghanistan for over two decades, with a particular focus on the realities of life and the rights of women. As the founder of the Afghan-German reporters' network *Kalima-News*, she is committed to strengthening independent media and training young journalists. In her book Die Afghaninnen: Plaything of Politics , she analyses the political instrumentalization of Afghan women. Shikiba Babori is one of the most prominent voices in the German-speaking world when it comes to women's rights in Afghanistan.
Edda Dammmüller studied Modern and Eastern European History and Political Science. She has worked as a journalist for the WDR radio program since 1993, presenting the regional magazine Westblick on WDR 5, among others.
